Parents & Carers

Investing in your child’s future

Research has consistently shown that parents and carers are the most influential factor in students’ decisions about the future. Your support and encouragement can influence their choices, and the guidance you provide will be invaluable to their eventual achievements and career pathways. This might feel a little daunting…the jobs of the future may be very different from your own experiences and choices. In fact, they may not have even been invented yet!

Want to make a careers appointment?

We actively encourage and invite parents to join any careers meeting with their child if the wish.

Face to face careers advice is available in school on Mondays and Thursdays through visiting the careers hub at break and lunch time or after school. Information regarding Post 16 options, courses, career paths, CV, employability skills and much more can be found in the face to face meetings. Appointments can be made through students contacting their Learning Manager or completing the booking form by clicking the ‘Book Now’ link below or scanning the QR code. Mr Whaley or the school careers advisor will be in touch as soon as possible to arrange a convenient time to meet.

Parent/Carer Feedback

We regularly review and update our careers programme to ensure we are meeting the needs of both parents and students. We are keen to hear feedback from parents and carers about how well we have helped your child to prepare for their next steps into post 16 and 18 education or training and prepared your child for life after The Laurel. We would therefore appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to complete the following survey by clicking on the ‘Take the Survey’ button below.

Parent & Carer Tips

There are some very simple and practical steps you can take to support your child

  1. Talk to them about their current educational attainment and estimated grades and encourage them to aim high (the skills shortages of the future will be in higher level jobs)
  2. Discuss where they want to be and research how to get there (lots of great resources in the Academy and on the internet)
  3. Use the links on the academy website
    Years 7-11  www.laurelacademy.org.uk/careers
  4. Encourage them to seek out the advice and experiences they need to help them achieve their goals
  5. Help them with the steps they need to take
  6. Encourage them to seek out their own work experience in the year 10/11 summer holidays
  7. You are welcome to attend your child’s careers meeting and we encourage you to contact Abe Pereira at The Laurel Academy if you need any more help or information.

Together with a range of career professionals, businesses and training providers we will support your son’s/daughter’s career development in a number of ways including:
