History at The Laurel Academy

In History lessons at The Laurel we aim to ensure that the subject is taught in an enjoyable and stimulating way. During lessons we encourage students to develop an appreciation and understanding of events and people that have shaped the past and the world in which we live.

We seek to enable students to become active historians by encouraging the development of enquiring minds that question and construct rational argument. Throughout our courses students gain experience of historical enquiry, narrative, analysis, questioning, debate and presentation of their findings.

We show how events in the past often link to contemporary events.  Pupils are encouraged to use their general knowledge and wider understanding in getting to grips with past times. We aim to ensure a sense of progress and development, both in skills and in the gaining of knowledge and understanding, for students of all abilities.

In lessons we always expect high standards of effort and commitment from students. We seek to encourage students to produce clear and well-organised written work.

By studying history in an academic way we also seek to enable pupils to develop an awareness of themselves and of their own beliefs and attitudes, and to encourage respect for those of others.

Extra-curricular opportunities in History

It is often said, and is very true, that experiential learning stays with students for the rest of their lives. For this reason amongst many others we are committed to ensuring that Laurel History students have opportunities to learn outside of the classroom.

Over the past two years Mr Clarkson and Miss Coates have led visits to the First World War battlefields of Belgium and France. Students have really enjoyed their experiences and have learned a great deal - about the subject and themselves.

In July 2019 we intend to lead a further visit to the WW1 battlefields for current Y8 students. More information will be given in January 2019.

We are also currently seeking to organise a Y9/Y10 educational visit to either Krakow/Auschwitz or Berlin for GCSE History students. Those who take part in this visit will enhance their understanding of the events surrounding the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party and the events that followed. This will certainly help develop contextual knowledge about the Weimar and Nazi Germany study unit.

The date for this visit will be announced in in early 2019.
