Mathematics faculty
Our vision is to ensure that all students will gain a GCSE qualification in mathematics that will enable them to progress in society, be numerate, enable them to understand financial essentials and help them to become effective decision makers and problem solvers.
We will do this by:
- challenging students to think for themselves
- setting students clear targets and objectives
- regularly assessing performance
- having a range of lesson styles
- providing encouragement and support

The maths curriculum
In Year 7 and Year 8, students follow a Scheme of Work which covers the following areas:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change
- Geometry and measures
- Probability
- Statistics
Students are given opportunities to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills while developing their confidence. An emphasis on the essential skills of thinking, problem solving, listening to others and sharing ideas, aims to consolidate knowledge and deepen understanding.
Students are assessed at regular intervals, progress towards targets is reviewed and any necessary intervention is put into place.
In Year 9 students start to follow the GCSE specification at either the Foundation or Higher level. This continues through Year 10 and Year 11. Students will be entered for Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (1MA1). Assessments take place regularly over year 9, 10 and 11. Students will receive a personalised analysis of their performance in each assessment. These are used to identify any intervention needs.
The final assessment consists of 3 written examinations:
Paper 1 (non-calculator) – 1 hour 30 mins
Paper 2 (calculator) – 1 hour 30 mins
Paper 3 (calculator) – 1 hour 30 mins
